Harvest mite. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a harvest mite (Neotrombicula autumnalis) larva that has fed. This parasitic mite is found throughout Europe. During the larval stage it feeds on the liquefied epidermal and cutaneous tissue of mammals and birds. It does this by piecing the skin and injecting its saliva, which contains enzymes to break down tissues, into the host's skin. Magnification: x160 when printed at 10 centimetres wide. | |
