Dragonfly neck. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the arrester region of the neck of a dragonfly (order Odonata). This area is covered in microtrichia (microscopic hairs, grey) that act like a hook and loop system to immobilise the animal's head during feeding and mating. The system is being researched for use as a fastening material. Magnification: x400 when printed at 10 centimetres wide. | |
