Fluorescent sponges. Two sponges (blue at top and yellow at bottom) photographed at night using blue flashlight and orange filter. The blue light excits pigments within the lower sponge and causes it to emit a fluorescent glow. It is thought the glow attracts symbiotic algae which in turn allows the sponge to grow in deeper water. Fluorescence may also offer protection against harmful ultraviolet light from the sun in shallower water. The top sponge reflects the blue light without fluorescence. | |
