Activated carbon. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) showing splinters of activated carbon. Activated carbon is an extremely porous form of carbon with a very large surface area. It is highly adsorptive which makes it suitable for a variety of applications such as absorbing unwanted odours. Also seen here are platinum particles (yellow) bound to the carbon. These particles act as a catalyst and are used in fuel cells, air filters, exhaust systems, and chemical catalysts. Magnification: x6, 600 when printed 10 centimetres wide. | |
