Dechlorinating bacteria. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of Dehalococcoides sp. bacteria (red) amongst other bacteria. This bacteria obtains energy by using chlorine atoms from chlorinated solvents as electron acceptors during respiration. A number of chlorinated solvents are persistent pollutants in soil and ground water. Therefore Dehalococcoides species of bacteria are being studied as a means of cleaning up contaminated sites.
