Human tongue surface with bacteria. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of bacteria (yellow) amongst epithelial cells on the surface of a human tongue. Epithelial cells are flat, scale-like squamous cells that are constantly shed and replaced. The epithelium covers the sensory papillae (small projections, not seen) on the tongue, which are sensitive to several different sensory stimuli, including taste. Bacteria on the tongue surface is normal, but can cause halitosis (bad breath). Magnification: x80 when printed 10 centimetres wide. | |
