Metal foam. Coloured scanning electron microscope (SEM) of foamed nickel metal, which results in a larger surface area for a lower overall weight. The foam is used in the aerospace and transport industry to reduce fuel consumption (since the vessel is lighter and easier to propel). It is also used in construction, in which less of the expensive metals are used to achieve the same robust structures. Magnification: x330 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
