Poppy pollen. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a pollen grain from the common poppy (Papaver rhoeas). The outer coating (exine) of this pollen grain is covered in spikes, which help it attach to the body hairs of pollinating insects. Pollen contains the male genetic information of a plant. It is carried by insects (or water or the wind) to the female stigma, where it sends a pollen tube to the ovaries, which allows a male cell to fertilise an ovule (egg) to form a seed.
