Ringworm fungus. Coloured Scanning Electron Micrograph (SEM) of Epidermophyton floccosum. This dermatophyte fungus is one of several species that cause ringworm, athlete's foot, & other such tinea infections of the skin and nails. The fungus' pear-shaped spore-producing structures (macro- conidia) are seen connected by filaments (hyphae). The hyphae spread into a large fungal network, known as a mycelium. This species, the only one in its genus, is found living only in association with humans. It is spread from one person to another through direct contact. Magnification: x500 at 6x6cm size. | |
