Francisella tularensis bacteria, coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM). This bacterium is the cause of the infectious disease tularemia, first described in Japan in 1837. The bacterium is found worldwide in hundreds of species of wild animals, birds and insects. The disease produces an acute febrile illness in humans, and the bacteria is considered a potential biological weapon. Treatment for tularemia is with Streptomycin.
