Ceramic brake disc. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a carbon fibre-reinforced ceramic brake disc. The raw material (composite ceramic), shown in yellow, is silicon carbide, which is very hard and abrasion-resistant. High-strength carbon fibres (blue) are embedded in it, which effectively absorb the stresses occurring in the material. A brake disc made of this composite material will last four times longer than a conventional steel brake disc. Magnification: x1100 when printed 10 centimetres wide. | |
