Stroke brain damage. Coloured axial computed tomography (CT) scan through the brain of a 69-year-old man with damage (pink area at centre right) caused by a stroke (cerebrovascular accident, CVA). This area of damage (due to blockage of the left middle cerebral artery) is in the brain's left hemisphere, and affects the right-hand side of the body. A stroke is where the brain is damaged due to hypoxia (lack of oxygen), in this case due to an interruption to the blood supply, such as a clot blocking the blood flow to the brain. The brain damage as resulted in expressive aphasia (Broca's aphasia), a partial loss of the ability to use language.
