Secondary brain cancer. Coloured axial magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan through the brain of a 38-year-old woman with metastatic (secondary) brain cancer that has spread from a primary breast cancer. The secondary cancers are shown by the presence of numerous lesions (round patches, blue and purple) in the cerebral parenchyma. Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women. Symptoms include painless lumps in the breast, a dark discharge from the nipple, and an indentation of the nipple. Early diagnosis can be made by mammography or self-examination. Once a cancer has spread, the prognosis is poor. This is a T2-weighted MRI scan, with injection of gadolinium.
