| Oesophagus, diaphragm and stomach, illustration. The lower part of the oesophagus (partially seen at top) passes through the diaphragm (centre) before reaching the stomach. The hole in the diaphragm is called the diaphragmatic or oesophagael hiatus. Food passing passing down the oesophagus enters the stomach, which secretes acid that breaks down the food. Digested food then passes out of the stomach through the pyloric valve (bottom left) into the later stages of the digestive system. | |
