Robert Stephenson statue. Known as the Stephenson Monument, this bronze memorial statue of the British railway engineer Robert Stephenson (1803-1859) was designed by sculptor John Graham Lough. Erected in 1862, it stands in Neville Road, in Newcastle-upon-Tyne city centre, close to Newcastle Central Station, Newcastle, UK. Robert, the son of George Stephenson, has been called the greatest engineer of the 19th century. In 1833 he was appointed chief engineer of the London and Birmingham Railway. Among his famous bridges are the High Level Bridge at Newcastle and the Conway (Conwy) and Britannia innovative box girder bridges. Photographed in 2017. | |
