Pneumoperitoneum due to perforated bowel, X-ray. The perforated bowel as resulted in gas accumulating at the top of the abdomen in the peritoneal cavity, trapped underneath the diaphragm. Air is seen trapped on both sides (dark spaces at lower left and lower right). This accumulation of gas is called a pneumoperitoneum. Surgery prevents further air entering, removes the existing air, and allows repair of the intestines. | |
