Abdominal free gas pockets, X-ray. Also called pneumoperitoneum, this condition results in air accumulating at the top of the abdomen in the peritoneal cavity, trapped underneath the diaphragm. Here, gas is trapped on both sides (dark curved spaces at lower left and lower right), a bilateral pneumoperitoneum. Pneumoperitoneum is commonly caused by the perforation of the bowel, or suction of air through the female genital tract. Surgery prevents further air entering and removes the existing air. | |
