Lymphoma. Specimen of the human pancreas and adjacent lymph nodes, showing malignant lymphoma. This is a non-Hodgkin's cancer of lymphoid tissue. At lower frame is tissue of the pancreas (orange), with the diseased lymph nodes enlarged and white. The scale reference is in centimetres. Lymphomas (non-Hodgkin's) differ in their malignancy & some are rapidly growing. In most cases the cause is unknown. It usually affects lymph nodes in the neck or groin. Unless controlled, spread of the disease impairs the immune system. Treatment is with chemotherapy drugs, although radiotherapy may be used for localized disease. In severe lymphoma a bone marrow transplant may be performed. | |
