Breast cancer. Section through tissue that was removed from a woman's breast, showing invasive carcinoma. At the top is a dense white area of diseased cancerous tissue. This tissue can be seen to be spreading into normal glandular tissue (yellow) in the lower half of the specimen. Cancer of the breast is the most common cancer in women. In most instances the disease is diagnosed by mammography (X-ray) screening, or found as a smaller lump during self-examination. Surgical removal cures a third of women with early cancer; radical surgery has now been replaced by lumpectomy, combined with radiotherapy and anticancer drugs. | |
