Mythical monstrous races of humans, 13th century. This depiction of four mythical races of humanoid monsters is based on descriptions by 1st-century Roman author Pliny the Elder. The monstrous races shown here are: Trococite, A Headless Man with Eyes on His Shoulders, A Headless Man with a Face on His Chest, A Man with a Large Under Lip. This manuscript page is thought to have been produced in Therouanne in what is now northern France in the later part of the 13th century (after 1277). It consists of tempera colours, pen and ink, gold leaf, and gold paint on parchment. This is the verso of folio 117 from the Ludwig XV 4 collection of manuscripts, held at the J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles, California, USA. | |
