Amelia Earhart on Jaluit Atoll. Photograph purported to be the final sighting of US aviation pioneer Amelia Earhart in Jabor, Marshall Islands, during her 1937 attempt to fly around the world. Earhart was the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic (1932). In 1937, she attempted to become the first woman to fly around the world. However, she and her navigator Fred Noonan disappeared on 2nd July 1937 whilst flying over the Pacific Ocean from New Guinea to Howland Island. No trace of the plane or crew has been found. A documentary in 2017 claimed that this photograph showed Earhart and Noona in Jabor and proved that they ended up in Japanese custody during their ill-fated journey. However, doubts now surround this theory as the image is thought to actually be part of a Japanese travelogue about the South Seas published 2 years earlier, in 1935.
