Shackleton's ship the Nimrod in 1908 amongst the ice in the McMurdo Sound during the British Imperial Antarctic Nimrod Expedition of 1907-1909 to the South Pole. This bay in the Ross Sea off Antarctica had become a main access route to the Antarctic continent. It was the winter land quarters of the expedition. Originally built as a schooner in 1867, the polar explorer, Ernest Shackleton (1874-1922) had the 334-ton vessel re-rigged as a barquentine and equipped with an auxiliary steam engine. It was Shackleton's second expedition to Antarctica and one of the objectives was to reach the South Pole. A party of four, led by Shackleton, left on October 29. They got to within ninety-seven miles of the Pole on January 9, 1909 but were forced to return to the Nimrod, reaching it at the end of February. | |
