Mineral sediment precipitation, Blue Lagoon, Iceland. The Blue Lagoon is a spa fed by mineral rich water from the Svartsengi geothermal power plant. The power plant uses a heat exchanger to transfer the energy from the geothermal waters. The discarded cooled geothermal water is rich in silica and sulphur minerals which are sold as cosmetics. Bathing in the water is therapeutic for some skin ailments including psoriasis. | |
