Light micrograph of a section through a computer's printed circuit board (PCB) with surface mounted ceramic capacitors. A small part of a PCB was embedded in light curing resin and then ground and diamond polished. The image shows the basic epoxy material of the PCB with glass reinforcement filaments in linen weave (blue) with one copper layer of the multilayer. Two ceramic capacitors in cross section are visible on the upper side of the PCB, showing the interior composition of the capacitor with several thin metal plates separated by ceramic material. Microscopic contrast technique: Incident brightfield combined with UV excitation fluorescence. Magnification 40x when printed 10 centimetres wide.
