Uterus and cervix, illustration. At upper centre is the uterus (womb), a pear-shaped hollow muscular organ. Not seen are the two fallopian tubes, which end at the ovaries. Every month one of the ovaries releases an egg (ovulation), which is received by the adjacent fallopian tube. The egg travels along the tube to the uterus, where, if fertilised, it will implant and grow. At the base of the uterus is the cervix (lower centre), which opens into the vagina (bottom), the muscular birth canal.
