Ottoman Sultan Bayezid I (1354-1403) in prison. 1868 illustration depicting sultan Bayezid I (Bajazet) of the Ottoman Empire after he was imprisoned by Amir Timur (Tamerlane) in 1402 following his defeat at the Battle of Ankara (1402). Bayezid I was Ottoman Sultan from 1389-1402. He built one of the largest armies in the world at the time but unsuccessfully besieged Constantinople (now Istanbul) and was eventually defeated at the Battle of Ankara. He died in captivity in 1403. | |
