Fruit fly head. Coloured Scanning Electron Micrograph (SEM) of the head of a fruit fly, Drosophila melanogaster. One of it's multifaceted compound eyes is visible (blue). To the right of the eye are two antennae consisting of small fleshy pads with bristle-like extensions (aristas). On the snout (at lower centre) is a proboscis (yellow) which is designed like a suction tube; palps of the mouthparts occur on either side of it. A number of long hairs on the head are used for touch. Drosophila melanogaster is widely used for genetic experiments because it reproduces rapidly and is easily manipulated in the laboratory.
