The passenger liner RMS Titanic sinking in the North Atlantic Ocean on the night of 14 to 15 April, 1912, on its maiden voyage from Southampton to New York. The disaster was attributed to a collision with an iceberg which ripped open the Titanic's hull in several places. Though claimed to be “practically unsinkable†it took two hours and forty minutes to sink, resulting in the death of more than 1500 of the 2, 224 passengers. Fresh evidence has suggested that the primary cause of the disaster was a fire in the ship’s hull, which researchers say had burned unnoticed for almost three weeks. Though the Titanic was the largest vessel in the world when she entered service in 1912, she was neither the finest nor the most technically advanced of her day. | |
