Anti-earthquake, or polygonal masonry at Ancient Eleutherai, Attica, Greece. During seismic activity polygonal stone blocks are much less likely to be dislodged than regular shaped blocks. This technique of stone construction was widespread in the ancient Mediterranean world. True polygonal masonry may be defined as a technique wherein the visible surfaces of the stones are dressed with mostly straight sides or joints, giving the block the appearance of a polygon. | |
