Drawing of a Pomeranium dog in the style of Leonardo da Vinci attributed to Francesco Melzi (1491-1568/70), a pupil of Leonardo who became his assistant, companion and secretary, and on his death in 1519, the executor and heir of Leonardo's will. Francesco Melzi is known for creating the Codex Urbinas, which is a selection and compilation of Leonardo's writings on painting. This became known as the 'Trattato della Pittura' – 'On Painting'. He began an extensive catalogue of Leonardo's thousands of notes and sketches with the intention of eventual publication but was unable to complete this work before he died. | |
