Female cancers. Scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of cells from the five cancers with the highest rates in females. Clockwise from top left are; breast, cervical, skin, colorectal and lung cancer cells. More than half of new cases of cancer in females are breast, lung or bowel cancer. Breast cancer is the most common type of cancer among women in both developed and developing countries. Twenty million new cases of cancer are expected to be diagnosed in 2030, and, by 2030, 13 million cancer deaths are predicted. However, these projections only reflect population growth and aging, so these figures will likely be much larger due to the adoption of lifestyles that are known to increase cancer risk, such as smoking, poor diet, physical inactivity, and fewer pregnancies, in economically developing countries. | |
