Kidney glomeruli. Scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a resin cast of glomeruli capillaries and the larger blood vessels supplying them with blood. The cells that usually surround the glomeruli have been removed to reveal the coiled capillaries at the core of the glomeruli and the blood vessels that serve them. The function of the glomeruli is to filter waste products from the blood. After the reabsorption of certain substances elsewhere in the kidney, the liquid is transported to the bladder as urine. The cast was made by injecting resin into the blood vessels. The surrounding tissues were then chemically digested. Magnification: x80 when printed at 10 centimetres wide. | |
