Ruins at Kerkouane, Tunisia. Kerkouane is thought to have been founded by the Phoenicians, becoming part of the Carthaginian Empire. It was abandoned after the First Punic War (264 to 241 BC), fought between Carthage and Rome. This ruin is the floor of a building with a symbol (lower left) to the Punic and Phoenician goddess Tanit. Photographed in 2007. | |
