Payne and Rebstock, US antibiotics researchers. At left is US physician and researcher Eugene H. Payne, with US chemist Mildred Catherine Rebstock (1919-2011) at right. Both worked for the Parke-Davis research laboratories and played key roles in the discovery and development of chloromycetin in 1947, the world's first synthetically engineered antibiotic. Payne was the first person to use chloromycetin on humans. Rebstock, the leader of the Parke-Davis research laboratories team, was the first person to synthesize the drug. Rebstock worked for Parke-Davis from 1945 to 1977.
