Lesson by Brazilian female aviation expert, 1940s. At left is Brazilian aviation expert and pilot Anesia Pinheiro Machado (c.1902-1999), giving a lesson to junior Pan American Airways pilot Dean E. Robinson. The photograph dates from around 1948, and was taken at a flight school in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, USA. Machado was the first person to obtain a US commercial pilot's license with additional ratings as instructor and for flying on instruments only. She was also an instructor for the Brazilian Air Force and commercial airlines. Machado had made her first solo flight in 1922, and was the first Brazilian woman to make a cross-country flight. | |
