Gertrude Van Wagenen (1893-1978), American biologist. Van Wagenen is best known for her work on the reproductive biology of rhesus macaque monkeys, which were used as a model organism for human reproduction. She established a breeding colony of the animals at Yale School of Medicine, New Haven, Connecticut, USA, from 1935. Detailed records were kept of the fertility and development of the colony, providing important baseline data for theirs and other's research. In 1966 Van Wagenen and colleague John McLean Morris were the first to demonstrate that a morning-after contraceptive could be successful. | |
