SESAME (Synchrotron-light for Experimental Science and Applications in the Middle East) project booster synchrotron magnets (red). These magnets accelerate electrons to 800 MeV (million electron volt) before feeding them into the facility's storage ring. The booster was built with upgraded parts of the German BESSY 1 accelerator, which was donated after its decommissioning. Construction of the independent laboratory in Allan, Jordan, began in 2002 and it was inaugurated in May 2017. SESAME is the only synchrotron facility in the Middle East, and the first in the world to be powered by renewable (solar) energy. Scientific research will be carried out across a number of disciplines, including medicine, physics, biology, archaeology and agriculture. Photographed in Allan, Jordan, in 2017. | |
