Kirsopp Lake, Silva Lake and Robert Pierce Casey, co-leaders of a 1938 Brown University-University of Pennsylvania joint expedition to excavate the site of the ancient city of Van in Asia Minor. British biblical scholar Kirsopp Lake (1872-1946) lost his appointment at Harvard as a result of the scandal following his divorce and remarriage to Silva Tipple New. Silva Tipple (1898-1983) obtained her doctorate from Brown University in 1936. Her first husband was Robert Warrington New. Her second husband (married 1932) was Lake, with whom she co-authored many works on the bible. Robert Pierce Casey (1897-1959) was chairman of the Department of Biblical Literature at Brown University. Photographed by Lord Avery.
