This sketch, in pen and ink over metal point, made by Leonardo da Vinci in 1478 is one of his earliest works and is possibly a study for the Benois Madonna. It demonstrates his ability to capture in very few strokes not only a happy moment in the closeness of this mother and baby relationship but the impression of motion, giving the image a strong sense of vitality. | |
