Jersey or Broad-Leaved Thrift. This thrift - Armeria arenaria- has flower heads on long stems - up to 60 cm. Although found in Jersey it mainly inhabits Western Europe in mountainous regions where it grows on mountains up to 2800 metres. Growing here on the limestone screes of the sub Alps of eastern France. Thrifts are a small family that thrive in locations on coasts and mountains where there is less competition. They have to be tolerant of wind, salt spray, temperature extremes, metal contaminated and poor soils that other plants cannot cope with. While looking frail they are, in fact, tough survivalists. Flowers early summer. Mont de Lure, Provence, France | |
