The Iceland population of Whooper Swan -Cygnus cygnus- breeds in Iceland and winters primarily in Britain and Ireland, with a few migrating to Europe. Four other populations of Whooper Swan breed in 1. Scandinavia and west Russia and winter in northwest and central Europe; 2. Black Sea and east Mediterranean population breeds in northern Europe and western Siberia; 3. Caspian and central Asia population breed in west and central Siberia; and 4. the east Asia population breed in central and east Siberia to northeast China. Whooper Swans undertake what is probably the longest sea crossing of any swan species, migrating 800-1, 400 km at up to 8000 metres altitude between Iceland and Britain/Ireland which they can achieve in 14-15 hours at speeds up to 50mph (80 km/ph). With warming winters and human feeding a few birds overwinter in the capital, Reykjavik. City centre lake, Iceland | |
