With Provence getting nearly 3000 hours of sunshine it is an ideal site for solar energy. On the Valensole plateau above the town of Les Mees the 2nd largest array of solar panels in France was constructed in 2009/10. The solar energy farm lies over 200 hilly hectares (approximately 494 acres) and is composed of 112, 780 solar modules. The farm can supply sufficient power for 12, 000 homes which, in energy terms, is 100 MW of electricity. The facility, designed to blend into the landscape, has fully recyclable panels and contains no permanent structures. The monitoring system allows production to be controlled remotely. Sheep flocks are used to control vegetation growth under the panels. | |
