Tsai-Ying Cheng, Taiwanese-US biochemist
Tsai-Ying Cheng, Taiwanese-US biochemist. Cheng was a graduate of Taiwan National University. She then studied at Princeton University, New Jersey, USA, carrying out research in the biochemistry department in what would later be known as genomics. In 1963, she became the first woman to be awarded a degree (a master's), and a year later in 1964 she became the first woman to be awarded a doctorate by Princeton. She carried out research at Johns Hopkins University and Brookhaven National Laboratories. By the 1970s, she was working at the Institute for Cancer Research, Philadelphia, and in 1978 joined the Department of Chemistry, University of Oregon, working on plant genetics.
