Diorite from Italy. Polarised light micrograph (PLM) of a thin section through diorite rock. Diorite is an intrusive igneous rock, found on the margins of granite batholiths. It contains plagioclase, anorthite and hornblende, often with accessory inclusions of magnetite, ilmenite or quartz. The rock is medium to coarse grained and appears dark grey to the unaided eye.
