Gialova lagoon and Voidokilia beach, Greece. This area has been designated as a Zone of Special Protection for both it's natural and cultural heritage. Gialova Lagoon is on the left of the picture and contains a body of brackish water that serves as a wildlife habitat, particularly for migratory birds, which stop here first on their way from Africa to Northern Europe. Voidokilia beach provides a natural barrier between Gialova Lagoon and the sea. A multitude of mammals, reptiles, amphibians and fish live in the lagoon. Prominent among them is the African Chamelaeon, which is threatened by extinction. | |
