Illustration of the Xi-cc++ particle, whose discovery by the Large Hadron Collider beauty (LHCb) experiment at Cern, the European particle physics laboratory, was announced in July 2017. The particle is a doubly charmed baryon"" made up of two charm quarks (c) and one up quark (u). The particle's existence had been predicted in the 1970s, but this is the first conclusive detection of such a particle. It's hoped that its discovery will lead to the discovery of other doubly charmed baryons, which will lead to precise tests for quantum chromodynamics, the theory of strong interactions." | |
