Veins in rocks are a result of the precipitation and/or crystallisation of minerals in faults or, more rarely, bedding planes in that rock, usually long after the formation of the rocks in question. This example shows veins of calcite (CaCO3) in limestone. The fact that veins intersect in this example indicates that different cycles of tectonic movement and calcite precipitation have been active. Location is Wadi Guhl in Oman. | |
