Moss agate (also called mocha stone) is a semi-precious gemstone made of chalcedony, that is silicon dioxide (SiO2.) It is a variety of agate, displaying a fake-organic, dendritic pattern suggestive of moss, with colours ranging from yellowish-green to brown-red and blues as well. Colouring depends on the presence of impurities or trace elements like copper, chrome and iron. Parts of this specimen are crystalline, blue-white quartz. Actual width of this cut and polished surface is about 45 mm. | |
