Astronaut Kathryn Sullivan standing by in her Extravehicular Mobility Unit (EMU) suit in the airlock of Shuttle Discovery during Mission STS- 31. The EMU suit is worn by astronauts when they perform extravehicular activity (EVA). Kathryn Sullivan and Bruce McCandless had to get into their EMU suits when the flight payload, the Hubble Space Telescope (HST), had difficulty in deploying its solar panels. No EVA was required, however, as the problem was fixed by a software command transmitted by Mission Control to a computer on the HST. STS-31 flew on Shuttle Discovery on 24-29 April 1990. | |
