Fruit bat tongue. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the surface of the tongue of a fruit bat (family: Pteropodidae). Fruit bats may feed on fruit, with some fruit bats feeding on nectar from flowers. These nectar-feeding fruit bats have long tongues adapted to reaching the nectar. The bat's tongue also transfers pollen between flowers, aiding the process of pollination. The rough surface (papillae) shown here, aids the transfer of pollen and nectar. | |
